The King Valley

The picturesque hills of the King Valley in Victoria's High Country offer natural beauty and adventure. The landscape has attracted generations of visitors to experience the wonder of this hidden gem.

The first vines in the King Valley were planted in the late 19th century by the Brown family, but the region’s rise to wine fame is a much more recent story. For most of the 20th century, tobacco farming dominated the area. When government policy shifted in the 1970s, farmers gradually began replacing tobacco with a new passion grapevines.

Many of these farmers were of Italian heritage, including Alfredo and Katrina Pizzini and Otto and Elena Dal Zotto. Recognising the valley’s topography and climate as reminiscent of northern Italy, they planted grape varieties from their homeland such as Prosecco, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio, Arneis, and Barbera.

Today, the scenic Wangaratta–Whitfield Road winds alongside the King River through rolling hills and farmland, home to a collection of charming vineyards, artisanal food producers, and even a craft brewery. The King Valley is quickly earning a reputation as one of Australia’s premier regions for Italian varietals, yet it remains a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
